Q&A WITH CHASE SEXTON
We caught up with Super Cross Champion Chase Sexton to get to know him better and hear about his first PXG fitting experience.
HOW LONG HAVE YOU BEEN GOLFING?
Three years
HAVE YOU BEEN FITTED FOR GOLF CLUBS BEFORE?
I got fitted once. It was 2018, and I’ve been playing those ever since. It wasn’t as elaborate a fitting experience as this; it was more of a quick fit. This was definitely more in depth and super fun to do.
DID YOU HAVE ANY EXPECTATIONS FOR YOUR PXG FITTING?
I mean looking at PXG in general, I feel you guys do stuff a lot different, and it’s a more professional look. Just the whole vibe of the brand looks a lot cooler, so I knew it was going to be unique. Then coming here and seeing the build shop, and everything is super cool. Everything’s the same, and it seemed super, super nice, so I was really excited to go into the fitting room to see the irons and the clubs. I hadn’t seen them in person at all so it was a really fun day, and I’m excited to take them to the course. Hopefully, it will lower my scores a little bit.
WAS THERE ANYTHING THAT SURPRISED YOU ABOUT THE FITTING OR THE CLUBS?
I would say the clubs. I mean, looking at them online they look, obviously different, but looking at them in person it just looked like a higher quality than most. Like I said, most of the other brands look the same. It’s much more personalized and every set of clubs is made to the spec versus standard.
WHAT GAINS DID YOU SEE WITH YOUR IRONS THROUGH THE FITTING?
I would say, not hitting as big of a draw as I was before. I call it a draw. It is more like a hook. So now I’m more of a draw. I think I gained. I think I hit my seven iron 175 yards before, now it’s 182 to 190 or 185 yards. Somewhere in there, so definitely gained distance. I think I’m in a heavier club which controls my swing a little bit more too. So overall, just less of a miss which is the ideal and then more distance. So, couldn’t have asked for anything better.
CAN YOU DESCRIBE IN ONE OR TWO WORDS THE DIFFERENCES YOU FELT BETWEEN THE XPS, PS AND TS?
Obviously the PXG 0311 Ts look cool and super small – like the pros hit. But for me, I’m not that great of a golfer so the 0311 Ps fit my game a bit more. I would just say that the club that I picked – the GEN4 P – I just think they’re super clean looking. Out of all the clubs, they have that thin look when you look down. You feel like a better player than you really are. So, I would just say “clean looking.”
YOU SPOKE ABOUT SOME SIMILARITIES BETWEEN TESTING YOUR EQUIPMENT IN YOUR OWN PROFESSION AND TESTING GOLF EQUIPMENT. CAN YOU ELABORATE ON THAT A BIT MORE?
Riding and racing, obviously the bike is a big, big part of what we do so. Testing is relatively the same. Obviously, we’re testing a dirt bike and not a golf club, but testing has a lot of feel. And, the better you get, the more in depth and in tune you are with your bike. You know more of what you’re going to do – more specific, but obviously I’ve gotten to the point where I know exactly the feeling I have on the dirt bike. I know what to do with the change and now doing the same thing with a golf club. I’m at the beginner level so I don’t exactly know what to change, but I know the feeling I have with the golf club and how I hit the bal. They read the data and see the same thing when you start testing on your bike. They look at your bike, and they kind of tell you what to do to fix it.
The more skilled you get, the more you have your say. I’m assuming it’s the same with golf club. Pros, I’m sure, go in there knowing what they want to fix and how they’re going to get that done. So, yeah, for me now I’m at the beginner level, like I said. I rely on them for their knowledge, and they did a really good job today. So excited to go out and play with the course.
