Alyx Dote:
Hi everybody. My name is Alex Dote and today I’m joined by PXG Ambassador and one of only five men to capture golf’s coveted career grand slam, Gary Player. Gary. Hi, how are you?
Gary Player:
I’m very well, thank you. And I hope you’re well.
Alyx Dote:
I am. Thank you so much. Okay. We’re going to get right into some rapid fire fan Q&A. You ready?
Gary Player:
I came ready.
Alyx Dote:
Born ready. All right, let’s go. Question one. You have PXG GEN3 Irons in your bag. What do you love about them?
Gary Player:
I love everything about PXG Irons, they are so good and PXG are making so many wonderful models and such great putters and clubs that I get so excited. I just want to continuously try a new one and that’s the great fun about it. And they’re the best, there’s no question about it their clubs are remarkable. They have the best system of Fitting. They are enormously professional company at marketing, and I just love that.
Alyx Dote:
Thanks, Gary! Alright. What is your favorite PXG club in the bag?
Gary Player:
Oh, I love all the clubs. I think my sand wedge (Sugar Daddy, PXG 0311 Milled Wedge), because I love to play bunker shots. Obviously I cannot play them like I did when I was a young man, but I love to play. And also, when you’ve missed the green, I’ve got a sand wedge to go over the hill. If the flag is at the front of the green, you need your sand wedge.
We, as professional golfers, we use the sand wedge instead of putting a lot. The average golfer should not. The average golfer should putt off the green or hit low chips with an 8 iron. Keep the ball running up. Don’t try and hit high shots like we do, but we are in a different league to amateur golfers.
Gary Player:
Although some amateur golfers play five times a week and they tell you they weekend golfers, but weekend golfers should run the ball up and pros – obviously – hit higher shots.
Alyx Dote:
What’s the best piece of golf advice you’ve ever heard?
Gary Player:
The best piece of advice I ever heard, Ben Hogan started in and he said at the top of the swing, you’ve got to rotate your left hip, rotate your body. When you go through the ball rotate your body. And I think the biggest thing with the weekend golfer is weight transference.
Gary Player:
He either keeps his weight on his left leg when he goes back, which is bad, or he keeps his weight on his right leg when he goes through. So golf is like a waltz, if the average golfer took a waltz, one, two, three. One, two, three, practice dancing with your wife or with a good looking chick and your golf will improve.
Alyx Dote:
And so might your personal life who knows?
Gary Player:
That’s right. Might end up with a good one, but if you end up with a bad one, God, don’t send me a message.
Alyx Dote:
That’s fair.
