The next generation of eco-conscious fashion is “regenerative” – learn all about our new 100% vegan Cactus Leather Handbag Collection .You’ve heard of recycled, reclaimed, reused, but the next level in eco-conscience fashion is regenerative! Let us introduce you to our new PXG Cactus Leather Handbags made from the nopal cactus – aka “prickly pear.”
As part of our commitment to sustainability, we work toward ensuring our seasonal apparel and accessory collections are more eco-conscious than the last. For this collection, PXG tapped the amazing team at Desserto® for the regenerative materials used to create our cactus handbags.
WHAT ARE REGENERATIVE MATERIALS AND FABRICS?
Regenerative fabrics are created in ways that support circularity – either through upcycling materials that are otherwise discarded, or through the soil-to-soil cycle of regenerative agriculture.
HOW IS CACTI GROWN AND HARVESTED FOR ACCESSORIES?
Desserto creates their vegan leather from the nopal cactus, a plant-based, PVC free, and heavy metal-free organic material.
This cacti species is native to the growing region and is very resilient. Prickly pear can handle low temperatures during winter and with smaller barbs; they are easier and safer for Desserto’s agriculture team to harvest. As only the mature leaves are selected, the same plant can be harvested every 6-8 months.
The Desserto production process reduces water use and energy consumption as the plant is grown with natural rainwater and not watered through irrigation systems.
Cactus is a natural carbon sink; it has a great CO2 sequestering capacity. From Desserto’s 14 acres, 8,100 tons of CO2/year is absorbed while generating only 15.30 tons of CO2 annually.
HOW IS CACTUS LEATHER MADE?
After cutting the mature leaves, they are dried under the sun for three days until achieving the exact humidity levels required in the production process. Desserto then processes the organic raw material using a patented, organic formula, meaning there are no herbicides nor pesticides used.
It takes approximately three leaves of cactus to create one linear meter of Desserto’s cactus leather.
The result is a beautiful, organic, sustainable material that’s a great alternative to animal leather. Cactus leather offers high resistance to abrasion, rubbing, tearing, and provides great durability.
ECO-CONSCIOUS, FUNCTIONAL DESIGNS
Versatility is the name of the game with our Cactus Leather Collection – consisting of six sophisticated, modular styles including a duffle bag, tote bag, crossbody bag, backpack, phone case bag, and sling bag. This collection epitomizes the PXG brand while addressing functional and organizational needs for just about any lifestyle.
